Simple ecology questions from AP Biology?

1)What is something that can be broken down by microbes into harmless chemicals and used by other living things.

These two questions are from my AP biology homework. I have no clue what they are so please help me. First person to figure out the answers to both questions will be chosen as best! Thanks!
